1. What first enters your mind when you think of Catholic Extension Society?

Catholic Extension Society is present in 100 of the poorest counties in the United States; in just the last 10 years alone, we have provided support in 45 states and territories across a wide range of diverse communities. Our support reaches 1 in 5 Catholics in America.

Since its founding 120 years ago, Catholic Extension Society has helped to build or repair 13,500 churches in the United States, more than any other organization in the country.

Catholic Extension Society is a papal society, operating under the guidance and protection of the Holy See. The president of Catholic Extension Society is appointed by the Holy See.

Catholic Extension Society does more than any other organization to support seminarian education in under-resourced dioceses, funding approximately 500 seminarians each year. We are proud to count many current Bishops as beneficiaries of Catholic Extension Society funding during their seminary studies.

There are no Catholic charities, no Catholic relief services, no Catholic hospitals, without there first being Catholic faith communities. Catholic Extension Society ensures there are faith communities across 45 states and territories, reaching some of the most isolated and impoverished areas with long-term investments, allowing us to evolve and support them more effectively.

3. Which initiative is most important to you?

Catholic Extension Society has distributed more than $1.5 billion in today’s dollars to dioceses that cannot support themselves, funding more than 1,000 parishes in isolated and financially poor regions every year.

There would be no Catholic Charities, no Catholic Relief Services, no Catholic hospitals, without first the existence of vibrant Catholic faith communities. Catholic Extension Society helps enable Catholic faith communities in some of the most isolated and impoverished parts of the United States.

Since its founding 120 years ago, Catholic Extension Society has always made long-term investment in communities where the Church has the potential to unleash vibrant, life-changing faith, the foundation of our commitment. We are more than just short-term relief for communities in need.

Catholic Extension Society is committed to an entrepreneurial approach to building up faith communities and their capacity to grow. Our response to the devastation in Puerto Rico, where we are helping lead the largest rebuilding in the western hemisphere in the history of Christianity, is just one example of out-of-the-box thinking to provide not just short-term relief, but long-term solutions.

4. Which of the following topics do you believe has the best chance of helping Catholic Extension Society achieve its mission to build up vibrant and transformative Catholic faith communities among the poor in the poorest regions of America?

Catholic Extension Society supports future lay leaders and sisters by providing scholarships and access to training; this year, through our U.S.-Latin America Sisters Exchange program, we helped 44 sisters graduate with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
