Health Ministry

In addition to their mission to nurture the Faith, many parishes and church ministries have a role in responding to their community’s various health needs and promoting wellness. This initiative will increase the Catholic Church’s capacity to respond to the health needs of diverse communities in the most underserved areas of the country. Through this program, salary subsidies will be available to fund new positions for professional Health Ministers who will provide outreach to people facing various physical and mental health issues.

This opportunity will be available for up to 8 dioceses this year.  The intended position may either be full time or part-time. There is great flexibility as to the type of minister that can be funded through this grant program. A few examples include, but are not limited to:

  • parish nurses
  • addictions counselors
  • family therapists
  • violence prevention educators/mentors.

Typical subsidies for this program will range in the amount of $10,000-$25,000, per year. Dioceses are responsible for determining their health related needs and making their own hiring decisions for this position.

The purpose of this funding program is to enable church organizations to expand assistance to communities that would otherwise be underserved or unable to access particular health related services elsewhere. Donor designation for this program stipulates that special consideration be given to church organizations that serve minority and/or impoverished communities. Given that this funding is not provided by a government entity, Catholic Extension Society will prioritize requests that demonstrate a strong pastoral component, as opposed to a purely clinical focus.
