By drawing upon the Big Apple’s cultural legacy, Archbishop Hicks was able to introduce his own down-to-earth pastoral style to his people for the first time. And in doing so he delivered his main message: that we are called to be a missionary Church that puts our faith into action.

A former orphan found in trash will read at Archbishop Hicks’ installation Mass

At today’s press conference at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the new archbishop of New York, Most Reverend Ronald Hicks, announced the touching choice to invite a young man and former orphan named Samuel Jimenez to read the scripture at tomorrow’s installation Mass.

Jimenez is an immigrant to the United States, and was once a resident in the El Salvador orphanage that Most Reverend Hicks led from 2005 through 2009 while serving as a priest in Central America. It is there Jimenez was given a chance to heal, grow, and eventually thrive as an adult thanks to the exquisite care he received.

By bringing the one-time orphan to read at his installation Mass, the new archbishop’s message is clear: people like Sam are the kind of souls who should always be at the heart of the Church, not the periphery.

Get to know the next shepherd of the Big Apple

On December 18, Pope Leo XIV made his first major appointment for the Church in the United States, designating Ronald Hicks to serve as the next Archbishop of New York.

This week, people from around the country will gather in Manhattan for Archbishop-designate Hicks’ installation — and Father Jack Wall, president of Catholic Extension Society, will be in the Big Apple to witness this significant moment firsthand.

We’re launching a special email series, The Pope’s New Man for Manhattan, featuring Father Wall’s reflections from inside the installation events. You can receive daily updates from February 5 to 7 by singing up here.

Like Pope Leo XIV, Archbishop-designate Hicks is a native of Chicago’s South Side. And in a similar vocation as the Holy Father’s, he was formed by years of service in Latin America, where he developed a deep love for the people he served.

In 2022, Archbishop-designate Hicks joined Catholic Extension Society’s Board of Governors at the invitation of Father Wall, and has helped us build up the Church’s presence among the poor and in the poorest regions of the country.

Archbishop-designate Hicks is someone truly worthy of the assignment, as he brings a missionary’s heart to Manhattan. This email series will offer thoughtful, timely reflections on what this significant moment means for the future of the Church in the United States.
