Catching up with Young Adult Catholic Leaders

Catholic Extension Society is invested in helping dioceses support, retain, educate and develop outstanding young adult leaders.

Through the Young Adult Leadership Initiative, Catholic Extension Society partners with the University of Notre Dame, Fordham University and Boston College to offer scholarships to leaders aspiring to serve the Church in the poorest regions of the country. Students in the program gain hands-on pastoral experience during their pursuit of a master’s degree in theology.

Young adult leaders from Extension dioceses apply for the scholarship program with a strong desire to further inspire faith in their communities. Students immerse themselves in their theological studies, gaining knowledge and experiences that are invaluable in their development as ministers of the Catholic faith.

Since the Young Adult Leadership Initiative began in 2011, 70 young adults from nearly 30 dioceses have received theology scholarships. At present, 17 students are actively pursuing graduate degrees from one of the three universities.

We recently caught up with some of our scholarship recipients. Some students are just starting their academic journey, and others are nearing graduation. Take a look at what they have to say about the program:

I’m getting to learn about the person I love and grow in love for Him with that knowledge. I wanted the knowledge so I could better minister to the people I was serving.”

Genevieve G’Sell | Campus and Young Adult Minister, Christ the King Parish | Diocese of Helena | Notre Dame 2021 Cohort

With this degree, I can better answer the questions of those that I serve. They’re seeking answers, and I can be a source of information in growing their faith.”

Santiago Banda | Youth Minister, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church | Diocese of Kalamazoo | Notre Dame 2021 Cohort

My journey through the master’s program has given me multiple vehicles to better express my faith experiences. I thank God for this opportunity.”

Edgar Guzman | Director of Campus and Young Adult Ministries, St. Paul Catholic Newman Center | Diocese of Fresno | Fordham 2019 Cohort

My love for the Lord and wanting to learn more made me decide to pursue a degree in theology. I am realizing God is so much more and it’s been amazing.”

Alyssa Salazar | Catholic Legacy Fund Assistant | Diocese of El Paso | Notre Dame 2021 Cohort

Gaining a deeper understanding of the faith that wouldn’t have been available to me otherwise has been great.”

Marcus Ayers | Campus Minister, Central Washington University | Diocese of Yakima | Notre Dame 2019 Cohort

Without donors from Catholic Extension Society, I wouldn’t have the impetus to do this master’s program.”

Helen Beckert | Campus Ministry Intern, Brescia University | Diocese of Owensboro | Notre Dame 2019 Cohort
