Yesterday parishioners packed Sacred Heart Church in Hidalgo, Texas, to celebrate the dedication of their new church building. The vibrant parish is located two blocks from the U.S. – Mexico border wall and serves many immigrant families. Their previous church building was overflowing with nearly 9,000 parishioners, but the new space allows the growing group to worship together as one community.
The pastor of the parish, Father Mario Aviles, knows that just like Jesus faced many trials, the many new immigrants in his community have also persevered through a long journey. His ministry ensures that these brothers and sisters in Christ are met with a warm welcome at this parish.
Through the generosity of our donors, Catholic Extension was able to offer a $75,000 matching grant on top of the $150,000 raised by parishioners to help support construction. The grant funding was raised through Cardinal Cupich's consistory celebration in Rome in 2016.
