As faithful followers of the Church we are all challenged daily as news of more abuse and the unfathomable manner by which the abuse was handled continues to unfold.

Catholic Extension stands with all victims of abuse in their pain and suffering. We are committed to ensuring that no support or recognition be given to any Church leader who is known to have failed to live up to the Church’s moral laws or violated or willfully ignored procedures for the protection of youth. In accordance, upon learning of the grave allegations we immediately removed Cardinal McCarrick’s name from the list of our recipients of the Spirit of Francis Award (and we have rescinded the award). We are deeply disturbed and fully regret any association of our award with an individual who has been charged with these allegations.

The Catholic Church carries a very heavy stain from the individual and systematic failures that have come to light. And as Pope Francis has stated, there are two words that can express the feelings faced with these horrible crimes: shame and sorrow. The hope for the future comes from the hearts of the faithful who during this heart-wrenching tragedy, remain resolute in finding the presence of God’s love in the face of the poor and suffering.
