December 14, 2017

For Catholics in the Coachella Valley, December 12 begins and ends the same way. The day begins with 4 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of Solitude Church in Palm Springs, California. More than 12 hours later, the day will end with Mass at Our Lady of Solitude Church in Coachella, California — 32 miles from where the day started.

Upwards of 4,000 Catholics annually make the powerful 32-mile procession in the sunshine, singing and celebrating and praising Mother Mary.

The Walk of Faith, now in its 17th year in Coachella, celebrates the local faithful’s deep devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Starting with a humble group of 100 pilgrims in 2001, the annual event grows in size every year.

Dr. Tim Muldoon, Catholic Extension's director of mission education, recently joined more than 4,000 people on a 32-mile procession to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Coachella Valley of California. Hear his reflections on the history, meaning and devotion to this Marian apparition.
