Catholic Extension is honored to announce Father John Jenkins, C.S.C. as this year’s recipient of the Spirit of Francis Award. Father Jenkins is president of the University of Notre Dame and has a long and distinguished resume. A graduate of Notre Dame with both undergraduate and advanced degrees from the University, he has numerous published works and many years of service to advance and represent the U.S. Catholic Church through academia and other endeavors.
In its second year, the Spirit of Francis National Award recognizes an individual or group that has made a significant impact on the mission of the Catholic Church in America through service or philanthropy. Spirit of Francis Award recipients are laudable for their commitment “to reach out to the margins of society” in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, Pope Francis, and the founder of Catholic Extension, Father Francis Clement Kelley.
The recipient of the inaugural award in 2014 was internationally renowned author and philanthropist Mary Higgins Clark, who has been a longtime supporter of Catholic Extension and her success as a best-selling novelist has its roots in Catholic Extension Magazine. Clark's first short story was published in the March 1958 edition of the then-monthly magazine. Click here to read Last Flight From Danubia.
