"If You See Something That Needs Doing, Do It"

"My mother always told me, ‘If you see something that needs doing, do it,’” said Sister RoseMary Boessen, when she received the Lumen Christi Award in 2009. In the town of Twin Falls, Idaho, a multicultural city with a sizable Hispanic population, there was a great deal that “needed doing,” so Sister RoseMary did it. In her 40-year career there and across the diocese, she conducted religious education programs in rural parishes, served as a religious education coordinator, helped establish a group foster home for girls ages 13 to 18, and made regular visits to prison inmates.

Much of her work, though, was devoted to local Hispanics. Through her ministry known as La Posada (The Inn), she provided translation assistance, English classes, immigration assistance, income tax filing and legal education, cooking and home skills classes, and family counseling. La Posada also included a food pantry and thrift store. More than 1,000 people passed through the doors of La Posada every year, and none were turned away. Because of the work of Sister RoseMary, there was always room at the inn.
