Weekly Meditation
Tomorrow we celebrate the Memorial of St. Martha. She, along with her sister, Mary and their brother, Lazarus were friends of Jesus. Tradition tells us that Jesus was accustomed to spend time as a welcomed guest in their home in Bethany outside the city of Jerusalem.
Martha is well known for her hospitality in serving Jesus when he visited. Her example challenges us to be ready to serve with and for others, especially the poor and weary who are truly Jesus coming to us..."whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters you do to me". St. Martha inspires us to service, a value so prominent in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ whose disciples we are today. "The Son of Man and has not come to be served but to serve..."
We are impressed and grateful for her confession of faith when Jesus came to visit at the death of her brother, Lazarus, even before Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. "I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God: he who is to come into the world". (Jn 11:27)
St Martha was a faithful disciple of Jesus. She is honored in the church for her faith and hospitality and as patroness of homemakers and housewives, waitresses and waiters.
ST. MARTHA, help us serve Jesus by being joyful servants in the world today.
