Weekly Meditation

Cardinal George Pell, the Archbishop of Sydney, Australia where the World Youth Day was held last week began activities with a welcoming Mass and homily in preparation for the major participation of Pope Benedict XVI.  Cardinal Pell in his homily gave a stirring welcome and challenge to the young people.  Even though he was speaking to youth, his comments give all of us a chance for prayerful reflection.

"We will bring forth good fruit by learning the language of the Cross and inscribing it on our hearts....Following Christ is not cost free, not always easy, because it requires struggling against what St. Paul calls "the flesh," our fat relentless egos, old fashioned selfishness. It is always a battle, even for old people like me!"

"Don't spend your life sitting on the fence, keeping your options open, because only commitments bring fulfillment. Happiness comes from meeting our obligations, doing our duty, especially in small matters and regularly, so we can rise to meet the harder challenges. Many have found their life's calling at World Youth Days."

"To be a disciple of Jesus requires discipline, especially self discipline; what St. Paul calls self control.  The practice of self control won't make you perfect (it hasn't with me), but self control is necessary to develop and protect the love in our hearts...."

Jesus, we want to follow you even with our crosses, strengthen us in our commitments, and help us develop and protect the gift of love in our hearts.
