    We Catholics hear the word evangelization more frequently these days. Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI have reminded us that every disciple of Jesus is called to be an evangelizer.     The Synod of Bishops in Rome October 5 - 26 on the topic "The Word of God in the Life and Ministry of the Church" closed with Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI. Words from his homily have real implications and challenge for us all:

    How many times, in the past few days, have we heard about experiences and reflections that underline the need emerging today for a more intimate hearing of God, of a truer knowledge of His Word of Salvation; of a more sincere sharing of faith which is constantly nourished at the table of the Divine Word!

    As we come to election day we are reminded of our blessings as a nation and our duties and responsibilities as citizens. Voting is surely one of those duties. We Americans are blessed by God with freedom, with great resources and opportunities even as we live in current times that are indeed quite challenging for us all. Words of Pope John Paul II, though spoken to a gathering of young people in St. Louis, January 1999, are very helpful for our reflection on election day and indeed every day.
