Mission Partner
Posted: 12/23/2008
Because you've heard from me before, you have come to understand that we have some real advocates in our midst - advocates of the Gospels and of the mission of Catholic Extension. And I would like to begin this new year with the story of these collaborators who have again caught my attention. I am confident they will capture yours!
Let me first invite you on a journey to the American southwest; specifically to the Painted Desert area of Arizona and lands of the Hopi and Navajo. Were we to travel 50 miles west from here we would stand on the eastern rim of the Grand Canyon. The landscape is beautiful and fills you with awe at the handiwork of God.

We Need Mission Partners
Posted: 10/1/2008
In this Jubilee Year of St. Paul, it is essential to remember Jesus' command to go and "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them... and teaching them to observe all I that have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19-20) The Lord commanded his apostles to travel "two by two." Paul frequently traveled with Timothy. It was important for the success of his mission to have a partner - someone he could rely on, to help him carry the load.

Building the Catholic Faith One Church at a Time
Posted: 8/22/2008
In many of America's mission areas, Catholic churches are little more than storefronts, school gymnasiums, or old movie theaters. For example, in Scottsville, Kentucky there's a little wooden sign that reads, "Catholic Church, half block up on the left." But when you drive by, you find that it's just a little 1960's style modular home with a steeple on top. There's barely room to stand. It's no bigger than a living room.

A Seminarian's "Experience of a Lifetime"
Posted: 8/1/2008
Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United States in April held special meaning for all Catholics, but it was the experience of a lifetime for those fortunate enough to see the Pontiff in person. Seminarians from around the country were invited to an outdoor rally and prayer service during the visit, and a limited number from mission dioceses were able to make the trip. Christopher Gray, a pre-theology student at Mt. Angel Seminary in Oregon, was one of two students from the school selected at random to make the journey. He is studying for the Diocese of Salt Lake City with Catholic Extension's support, has a journalism background, having worked for six years as associate editor of the diocese's newspaper, The Intermountain Catholic.

The Power of One
Posted: 4/8/2008
Sometimes God uses just one person to bring hope to an entire community and change lives. One person, one act, one word can change everything. This is especially true in America's missions, where many missionaries carry out their work alone, in places where there are few job opportunities and people struggle for their daily bread.

Mission Seminarians Need Your Help
Posted: 3/1/2008
The word "sacrifice" crops up in almost any conversation with seminarians. They're grateful for the generosity of all those who helped in their formation along the way. Especially in rural areas, young men studying for the priesthood are humbled by the sacrifice of others who have made their studies possible. Catholic Extension provides assistance to 40 mission dioceses to help train their future priests...

Displaced Elderly New Orleans Sisters In Need of Residental Care Facility
Posted: 1/30/2008
Right now, six Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille are in need of your prayers and support. They are elderly, some are in poor health ... and they're all far from home. They need your help today. Each of these sisters has selflessly given her life to God in service: teaching young children the catechism and the staples of our Catholic Faith ... feeding the hungry and homeless in soup kitchens ... and providing comfort and solace to the elderly and homebound. By constantly sacrificing and giving, they live the spirit of Lent daily. The sisters also continue to pray for you and all of our Catholic Extension mission partners. On August 28, 2005, these sisters were ordered to evacuate their New Orleans home. . . .

Newman Center Destroyed By Fire
Posted: 1/1/2008
When a bolt of lightning reduced the Newman Center at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri to a heap of charred rubble, it was something of a miracle that no one was injured. Mass had ended at a little before 10:00 p.m., and within a couple of hours, Director Bettie Lesczynski received a phone call telling her the center was ablaze. She could scarcely believe it.

Creaky Altar, Shabby Linens
